Chris – Project Three

For this project I have been tasked to create a concept facial design for a character based on a existing franchise for example Lords of the Rings, Harry Potter and Labyrinth.

Concept Artists:

John Howe:

Concept artist on Lord of the Rings.

Alan Lee

Artist who has worked on fantasy characters and mainly Middle Earth.& Moor.

Brian Froud

He is a British fantasy illustrator who has worked on the films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

Research Images of trolls, ogres and golems:

These images are from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor which is a fantasy game with the pegi rating of 18, this means that the game is for 18+ and wouldn’t be suitable for children.

I found this illustrated image whilst I was searching for my research and I might use this image to inspire my outcome, what inspires me about this image is the hair and I think I might be able to use this in a blending technique.

Photoshop Ageing Process:

Gollum Test:

For this I experimented with an image of myself and a image of a old person then put them both into photoshop and blended them together, what I did to this final outcome was I put a picture of a old person behind myself and then mapped a piece of the old person’s face then placed that section on my face and then blended it in.

I think the outcome is effective and shows what can be done by blending two pictures together, I think this process will be useful for my outcome.

I like this technique and it might be something I will use for my outcome.

When I was in the process of doing these 3D models heads of me, I particularly found doing the eyes, the nose, the mouth and the ears the most difficult to make. It did turn out better than I initially thought it would but it was very time consuming but I am happy with the result I got in the end.

Face from front view:

Initial Research Task – Creatures – Teams

Independence Research – Skill and Muscle Structure:

UV Mapping: Soup Can

UV Mapping: Face:

If I were to work on it further I would’ve adjusted the top lip.

My ideas:

My idea is to create a facial design for a character

Outcome:

Evaluation:

This term for me having to work remotely has been really different and difficult, when I am in a workplace surrounded by people and having a laugh I tend to get work done more because it is a positive energy but being at home, I am on my own and it can be difficult trying to get work done. I don’t really think I could see myself working freelance because being at home, a lot goes on and it can distract me from concentrating on my work, I think an environment like a studio/place of work with other people would make me work and concentrate better. The skills and methods I plan to take to FMP are Rotoscoping (If possible) and the things I’ve learnt around 3D modelling.
